About the course
Aim
The course gives knowledge about technology and systems used for highly specialized care within intensive care and surgery. The course also illuminates specific problems associated with monitoring of vital functions and emphasizes benefits regarding medical and ethical aspects. After the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe and explain measurement methods and systems used to monitor vital parameters during intensive care, anesthesia, mechanical ventilation, and surgery on adult as well as neonatal patients and be able to reflect and discuss about difficulties and desirable characteristics of the systems.
- Describe and explain technical systems used within intensive care and surgery to treat patients and maintain their vital parameters and be able to reflect and discuss about difficulties and desirable characteristics of the systems.
- Describe and explain issues in intensive care and surgery regarding ethics, safety, legal responsibility, and environment from perspective of ethical principles and laws.
Content
- Intensive care: Technical systems and their clinical applications, monitored parameters, anesthesia, and mechanical ventilation. Examples of applications are: Fetal and neonatal monitoring, intensive care monitoring, and heart pumps.
- Surgical systems: Technical systems for open and minimally invasive surgery, their physical principles and clinical applications. Examples of applications are: design of the operating room, equipment and organization, systems and methods for navigation, planning and simulations of surgical operations, endoscopic surgery, electrosurgery, and laser surgery. Examples of techniques and applications are given within fields such as abdominal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and neurosurgery.
- Ethics, environment, accidents, and incidents: Issues concerning ethics, safety, environment, and legal responsibility regarding intensive care, surgery, transplantations, accidents, and incidents.
- Project work within one of the following fields: Endoscopic surgery, Heart pumps, Anesthesia, Fetal monitoring, Neonatal monitoring, Intensive care monitoring, Neuronavigation, the Operating room.
- Lab exercises: Mechanical ventilation, Electrosurgery
