About the course
Aim
It is important that you acquire general mathematical accuracy and a stable foundation for your continued studies. After the course is completed you should be able to:
- Carry out problem solving and calculations related to the course content.
- Explain and justify solutions using relevant concepts and clear reasoning.
- Perform checks on results and sub-results to verify their accuracy and/or reasonableness.
Content
Algebraic expressions, inequalities, the absolute value. Equations. Sums, especially geometric and arithmetic sums. The binomial theorem. Coordinate systems in the plane, polar coordinates, equations for circles and straight lines. Functions and function curves. Definition of the elementary functions: polynomials, the natural logarithm function, exponential and power functions, trigonometric functions, arc functions, hyperbolic functions. Investigation of the properties of the elementary functions. Complex number plane, complex numbers in rectangular and polar form. Complex exponential function. Euler's and de Moivre's formulas. Basic principles of logical reasoning and proofs.
