About the course
Aim
Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Analyse the functioning of markets, with particular emphasis on industries characterised by imperfect competition.
- Explain different market structures and the factors that determine market structure of a particular industry.
- Apply microeconomic theory to analyse the behaviour of firms and other market participants in different market settings.
- Explain appropriate public policy interventions in markets characterised by imperfect competition.
- Discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with public regulation of imperfectly competitive markets, including regulatory reforms and market liberalisation in Sweden.
Content
The course analyses markets by examining the interaction between the fundamental characteristics of industries, market structure, and business strategies, and how these factors affect market performance. Microeconomic theory is applied to understand how market participants behave under different market structures and how various strategies influence market outcomes.
Particular emphasis is placed on public regulation. The course covers theories of public regulation, competition law, experiences from regulating different markets, and the liberalisation and deregulation processes that have taken place in Sweden in recent decades.
